Xeomin vs. Other Neuromodulators

• Doesn’t contain protein additives
• Doesn’t trigger the development of antibodies
• Achieves desired effects in those who have become resistant to other neuromodulators

Xeomin is the only pure wrinkle relaxer on the neuromodulator market and has been FDA-approved since 2010.

Its active molecule, botulinum toxin type A, is same as the one in Botox, yet Xeomin does not contain protein additives, which are responsible for partial or full resistance to all other neuromodulators over time. In other words, these proteins might prevent the desired effect of Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and other neuromodulators in 6-7% of individuals, or reduce the desired effect in a subset that is estimated to be far greater than 7%.

Study results published in March 2020 show that there is no risk of developing antibodies against Xeomin. Furthermore, Xeomin will be able to achieve desired effects in those who have become resistant to other neuromodulators latest by 10-14 months after last injection. The effects of Xeomin occur within 3-14 days and the results last from 3 to 6 months, making it comparable to Botox for both onset and duration of action.

Botox Overview

Botox is best for dynamic lines and mild static lines on the upper face. It can also decrease a pebbly chin, vertical lip lines, as well as vertical bands that form on some aging necks. It lasts between 3-6 months and the number of units needed is determined by the strength of the targeted muscle.

A bacteria-derived toxin is injected into specific muscle groups to specifically relax them and restore a worry-free, youthful appearance. Only Botox, the US approved grade of botulinum toxin A, is used in our office. Moderate and severe static lines need several sequential botox treatments to melt away.

Expected Results

Relaxation of the dynamic face and neck rhytids (wrinkles), which results in a more youthful appearance and smooth, firmer skin.

Post Treatment Instructions

Avoidance of aspirin and ibuprofen for 1-2 days.

Duration of Desired Effects

The final results will be visible after 1 to 2 weeks and typically last 3-6 months. Most people who like the effects will repeat injections every 4 months to maintain their results.

Contraindications

Myasthenia gravis, allergies to egg white and kanamycin, pregnancy and breastfeeding are contraindications.

What Areas Can Botox Treat?

A basic Botox treatment hides facial wrinkles created by repeated movement. Advanced use of Botox includes the shaping of facial features. If performed conservatively, your family and friends will appreciate that you look more relaxed and younger but they will not be able to figure out how you did it. Botox can treat the following areas and in some cases, it can be combined with fillers such as Radiesse, Belotaro, and Juvéderm:

1. Forehead Lines – Botox – 8-12 units for women or 10-18 units for men treat dynamic and mild static lines. Deeper static lines will respond after 3-4 injections if spaced 4 months apart. Results last 3-6 months.
2. Frown lines – Botox – 15-25 units for women or 20-35 units for men treat dynamic lines and mild static lines. Deeper static lines will respond after 3-4 injections if spaced 4 months apart. Results last 3-6 months. Belotero 1/2 syringe treats moderate to deep static lines, or bridges results until Botox takes effect.
3. Brow lift & Upper lids – Radiesse 1/2 syringe to each temple lifts the upper lids gently. Botox – 10-16 units for women and 12-20 units for men will gently lift the brows.
4. Crows feet – Botox – 10-20 units for women or 12-20 units for men treat dynamic lines and mild static lines. Results last 2-3 months.
5. Lower lid crepiness/ Sunken undereyes – Botox 2-4 units reduce fine lines on the lower lids. Results last 4-6 months. Restylane / Belotaro Balance® 1-2 syringes will elevate deep hollows and lighten dark circles.
6. Vertical upper lip lines – Juvederm / Restylane / Belotaro Balance® 1 syringe treats moderate to deep lines. Botox – 4-8 units treat mild static lines. Results last 3-6 months.
7. Pebbly chin – Botox4-6 units treat this forceful muscle. Results last 3-6 months.
8. Vertical bands – Botox 10-40 units will relax platysmal bands for a period of 3-6 months.

Note: Sculptra and Artefill can be used in place of Radiesse. Usually, several treatments are necessary to achieve desired volume correction. Their upfront cost is substantially higher, yet, fewer treatments are needed in the long run.

Botox vs Fillers

Unlike fillers, which treat areas of the face where aging causes loss of skin volume, Botox targets facial wrinkles that are created by dynamic movement. As we age, loss of skin elasticity allows repetitive muscle movement to create a visible crease in the skin. Botox weakens this muscle movement and prevents lines from forming. Many times, it even reverses wrinkles that have already settled.

Many people are self-conscious about smiling because over time it can increase wrinkles. However, with every smile, our body releases endorphins which keep us happy. It would be unhealthy not to smile for fear of facial lines. Yet, with the help of Botox, we can now have a guilt-free smile without fearing that we deepen the dreaded crow’s feet. With Botox treatments, we can untrain the forehead muscles and those between the brows to no longer look constantly strained or angry.

Botox works best to prevent wrinkles. Once wrinkles are visible at rest it will take some time until the skin returns to its original shape. Deep static lines may need extra help from a filler if they have not resolved after 3 Botox injections 4-6 months apart.
